I went shopping this weekend, and it was hard to find good things for spring. This pic from an email from Nordstrom sums up why:
A) Shrunken jackets. Who does this flatter? it shows off your ass in an unappealing manner, and the sleeves hit the arm as though there was an accident with the laundry. The model knows this and that is why she looks so pissy.
B) the long necklace, randomly swinging about. This may have been saved if it were wrapped around again, but as it is, it looks like she lost her security badge and is just wearing the badge holder.
C) The Camisole top. Really? Still? At least this one covers her stomach. That trend is played out.
D) This purse is everything I hate in one accessory. Metallic leather.* What? I hate that slouchy shape. Also, the strap is too long to be a handbag and too short to be a shoulder bag. Blech.
*ok in shoes - never in purses or clothing
E) Bermuda shorts? Seriously? These flatter models and 17 year olds, and that is it. And not even most of them. At least they distract from exhibit F.
F) Rope Wedge Shoes. Double Blech. Macrame is never ok. Not in shoes, purses, or home decor. I am nostalgic for my girl scout troop though, because we made plant hangers in 1980 that these shoes remind me of. It was probably out of fashion then.
I did, however, manage to find quite a few trends that I can get behind. The flowy/big skirt for example. Several people have mentioned to me lately that they don't like this trend because they have big hips. I think they need to try these skirts on, because they do work with hips. See several at anntaylor.com
I am also a fan of what I am calling Kermit the Frog Green - and it is everywhere. That and lemon yellow are the closest thing to a pastel that you are going to find. This spring is all about the bright colors - coral and turquoise are particularly hot. This is hard for alot of people to pull off, myself included. So it took some digging.
There are alot of good trousers out there. I like this pair. It is good that not every pair of pants in the mall were cropped like most seasons. Longer is more flattering for most women. There are also alot of pants out there with really cute scarves as belts. I almost fell into this trap several times though because I realized I liked the scarf better than the pants. I could, in fact, create this on my own.
There are about 6 million pairs of shoes that I can get behind this spring. Sadly, my budget does not accomodate this.
Tunic tops are also back. This really is flattering to everyone. Two thumbs up! The only drawback is that they are almost all sheer, so now you have to find something coordinating under it.
